Borobudur temple was built long time ago, even before the Angkor Wat in Cambodia and some cathedrals in Europe. Borobudur is located in Center of Java island in Indonesia and becomes a world heritage monument.
Based on the history, the Borobudur Temple was built by Samaratungga in 8 or 9 century. The process took about 75 years. The temple designer, Gunadarma, used about 60,000 cubic meters of andesite stones which brought from Elo River and Progo.
The wall of Borobudur Temple is decorated by 2,672 engraved panels. The reliefs tell about 4 main stories, Karmawibangga, Lalita Wistara, Jataka and Awadana. It told about the life story of Buddha and the people at that time. There is a replica of a ship that used to sail through the Cinnamon Route. The Cinnamon Route is from Java Island to Africa. The ship which is called Borobudur Ship can be found in Ship Museum of Samudraraksa.
In order to follow the history from the reliefs on the wall, you must walk clockwise around the temple or it is known as Pradaksina. You must enter from the eastern door and walk clockwise so that the temple always on your right side until you reaches the temple stair to go to the next floor. Repeat the same thing till the top of the temple.
It needs a lot of energy to reach the top, however, you will see the magnificent scenery of surrounding areas. The temple is surrounded by some mountains such as Menoreh Hill, Sindoro Mountain, Merbabu Mountain and the biggest mountain in Central Java, Merapi Mountain.
