The island of Santorini, and its contiguous islets is a part of the caldera of a volcano that burst in the XVII century. C. The effects of its eruption caused an ecological, climatic and cultural disaster in all the Eastern Mediterranean. The island was an immense cone of a volcano of the same type as the Krakatoa (which erupted in Indonesia in 1882 causing climatic disturbances for years) and its explosion destroyed the entire center of the island, making its current orthography a kind crescent cut over the flooded caldera.
