K2 or the Karakoram II is the second highest mountain in the world. Located in Gilgit-Baltistan region in the north of Pakistan, K2 is known by many names such as Mount Godwin Austin. The local people call it several different names in the native language of the area such as Chhogori, Qogir, Ketu and Kechu. The mountain is the highest peak in the Karakoram Range and rises to a startling height of 8,611 meters. The Karakoram Range has many other high mountains as well, most of which stay covered in snow throughout the year. This mountain is also the tallest mountain in Pakistan and attracts many adventurous tourists from all around the world.
K2 Danger and Desire
K2 is known throughout the world as the Savage Mountain. This name is given to K2 because of its extremely dangerous ascent. Over the years, many mountain climbers have lost their lives trying to scale this mountain. The ascent and the weather are so severe that according to a survey for every 4 people that have made it to the summit, one dies trying. Another way to reach the K2’s summit is through China, but it is even more hazardous. That’s why most people try to climb it from the Pakistani side. Another interesting fact about K2 is that no one has ever been able to climb it in winter because it’s difficult to climb it even in summer.
Although K2 is a dangerous mountain to climb, but this doesn’t stop people from trying. Many people have tried and some have succeeded as well. The first successful attempt to reach the summit was made by Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli in 1954. After that several other mountain climbers have been able to leave their mark on top of this treacherous mountain as well. Every year, many tours are arranged to take adventurous tourists to the base camp of K2. Many people enjoy hiking on base of this gigantic mountain as well. The weather stays severe throughout the year, but it becomes completely impossible to reach even the base camp during winter due to landslides and snow.
