Whether you are taking a quick trip to the cabin, the beach, or even to Europe over a long weekend, you always want to pack the essentials without overpacking! Here are our tips for making sure you have everything you need without going overboard.
Make A List
The key to packing light is making a list of exactly what you need. When you pack frantically at the last minute, you end up shoving 14 shirts into your bag with no shoes and you always forget the toothbrush! As you make your list, keep in mind the pieces that you will be wearing during your travel time and see if you can wear pieces that you can mix and match with the rest of the clothes you will be bringing.
If you are going to your favorite resort or a fun new hotel by the beach for a long weekend, you may feel tempted to bust out your brand new stunner pieces. Don’t! And don’t pack crazy prints, stick with solid colors that look good on you and together. Pack basics that can be put together in a variety of combinations for whatever activities come your way. A pair of shorts, a pair of pants, a tank top, a short sleeve, a long sleeve, a sweater, and two pairs of shoes should really complete your capsule wardrobe.
Make sure you pack a few extra undergarments. You never know what you might be getting into and it is always better to have an extra set of underwear than to not have enough. Luckily they are small and lightweight and won’t take up too much space in your bag. If you are bringing light-colored or sheer clothes, be sure to bring undergarments that work so you don’t end up with clothes you can’t wear.
Depending on where you are traveling, pack a few pieces that can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, a beach cover up that can double as a shirt or a dress, or a pair of jeans that can be dressed up for dinner and down for hiking. Make sure you know the weather where you are going so you know if you need to back an umbrella or rain jacket, or if sandals and sunglasses are the way to go.
If you are going just for a long weekend, chances are you don’t need to bring your full size bottle of shampoo and body wash. Purchase travel sized versions of your favorite soaps, or check with the hotel to see if they provide soaps and shampoos. Be sure to always bring your own toothbrush, hairbrush, and any hair products. If you take medications, pack those in a separate container that is easy to access. Don’t forget deodorant, sunscreen, and lotion!
